If you’re not yet familiar with Like, he is one third of Pac Div and has quickly supplanted himself as one of the West Coast’s most-respected producers. Like branched off on his own and just released his first solo project, Songs Made While High. In his debut album Like shows up that he can rap too. It should also come as no surprise that the 14-track project is completely self-produced.
The album opens with trippy synths in “Mushroom Clouds. Oververlaying vocals are then added to the intro track, setting the psychedelic tone of the album from the get-go. Its quickly followed up by “Mission Road” featuring Anderson.Paak, who along with Kali Uchis are the lone features on the album.
Through the next few tracks Like Lamped he really shows off his versatile spitting. The beat on “Kiwi Strawberry & Mango” stands out, reminding me of a Kendrick Lamar joint. This comes as no surprise since Like is the producer behind “Sing About Me, Dying Of Thirst” off of Good Kid, m.A.A.d City.
Like gets the most lyrical in “Blah Loops,” and shows he can sing as well in “If Only You Knew.” Like nails this album by balancing trippy instrumentals and sample centric songs with more lyrical ones. “Hi (gh) Away” is the only completely instrumental track on the album, putting Like’s impressive production skills front and center.
Like displays plenty of versatility throughout the 14 tracks, switching up his flow often. “yo, hit you with the Migos flow” is a line in “Leanin.” Overall Songs Made While High is a truly impressive debut album, and it's refreshing to hear Like’s voice for the first time since Pac Div’s last album.
