Inspirational and personal is what I want from my music. It just makes the music sound and feel better.
After listening to Oakland's Zion I's solo album "The Laybrinth," those two words instantly come to mind. Not saying it's a classic, but it provides enough depth for any listener. When I say depth I mean production quality and the length of the album is enough for the artist to show variety, but not to much to were the listener gets bored.
"The Labyrinth" delivers fifteen singles produced by Ariano, Mikos the Gawd, Teeko and Decap and features from Deuce Eclipse and Codnay Holiday and from the start strikes personal cords from the sound of Zion I's son on the intro, "Pre-Destine." That theme continues throughout with tracks like "Not Ur Fault" written after the death of Zion's father last year and "Let Me Be" where Zion I weighs in on Black America.
"As a father of three, I have to do my best to prepare my children for the world they will inherit," states Zion I.
Inspiration comes through in tracks like "Wings" were Zion connects with the listener declaring, "he just wants to be the best me he can be" and continues with the up beat "Saving Souls" spiting lines for female listeners stating, "queen you settling you should rule the earth." I sure hope he saves some souls with this one I know I had my arms raised while in the gym or maybe I was just stretching out my triceps. However, the up beat feel of "The Labyrinth" slides into "Dinner Time" and the triumphant "Wake Up."
By the end in true west coast form, "The Labyrinth" will ask is there a heaven for a G. I suggest that if you're not familiar with Zion I, aka Zumbi, "The Labyrinth" is the prefect way to be introduced and after you may want to check out the track "Tech $" and the mixtape "Stay Woke."
"The Layrinth" is available for download on iTunes here.
