On Novermber 28th, Smoke DZA & Pete Rock celebrate the release of Don't Smoke Rock at Babygrande's 15th Anniversary event in classic style at a jam-packed Highline Ballroom. Don't Smoke Rock is slated for release on December 2nd on Babygrande Records.
Hot 97s DJ Relly Rell hosted the evening which began with short sets from Babygrande's newer acts like Journalist 103 who represented well the NY Boom Bap sound that we are accustomed to hearing from the label.
Next up, Young Roddy and Trademark the Skydiver took us on a laid back journey with a set which featuring some of their jet life classics along with new material from their upcoming release, Family Business.
As the crowd grew to capacity, Wu-Tang's U-God and GZA, both labelmates on Babygrande, hit the stage in sequential order with assistance from WuTang brethren Masta Killa and Jackpot Scotty Wotty. Each rap star ran through a combination of Wu-Tang classics and solo gems amassed during their amazing 20 years of hits.
For an encore, fellow Harlem legend, Cam'Ron, congratulated the duo on a job well done then blessed the mic capping off a great night of an all-star cast of emcees representing Babygrande, one of the last great Indie labels left from the golden era of hip hop.
